Overview

Pructon was engaged to undertake critical upgrades to the Mount Kynoch Water Treatment Plant, focusing on mechanical fabrication and equipment installation. This upgrade is a direct response to Toowoomba Regional Council's Water Vision 2050, which identified the need to expand the plant’s capacity to meet growing demands. The project, initiated in early 2022, successfully increased the plant's capacity from 55ML/day to 79ML/day, improving water reliability for Toowoomba and surrounding regions.

Scope of Work

  • Installation of Lamella Packs: Drained the plant clarifier and installed new lamella packs to enhance sedimentation efficiency.
  • Replacement of Filter Nozzles: Removed media and replaced filter heads, installing 180 nozzles per tank during a plant shutdown, ensuring uninterrupted water supply.
  • Replacement of Filter Media: Replaced filter media across all filter tanks for improved filtration performance.
  • Upgrade of Backwash Overflow Launders: Removed old concrete launders and installed prefabricated 316SS launders for increased durability.
  • Replacement of Backwash and Clear Water Pumps: Electrically isolated and replaced outdated pumps, with careful monitoring of sump water levels.
  • Installation of Chemical Dosing Units: Set up chemical dosing units and connected pipework to dosing points for accurate water treatment.
  • Installation of Penstocks and Stopboards: Replaced outdated equipment to ensure operational continuity during shutdowns.

Outcomes and Benefits

  • Increased Capacity: Boosted water treatment capacity by 44%, meeting the region’s growing water demands.
  • Improved Reliability: Ensured continuous water supply throughout upgrades, enhancing service reliability for Toowoomba and neighbouring areas.
  • Future-Proofed Infrastructure: Positioned the plant to support significant regional population growth, with the infrastructure ready to handle future expansions.
  • Enhanced Operational Efficiency: Upgraded components ensure smoother, more efficient plant operations, reducing maintenance needs and improving overall plant performance.
